Randori Kata

Katame-No-Kata (Kata on the Ground)

Katame no kata is a randori kata on the ground and comprises 15 techniques which are performed in 3 sets of 5. The sets are Osae waza, Shime waza and Kansetsu waza. Although a randori kata the final technique is a leg lock as the kata was introduced at a time when leg locks were permitted. This last techniques must be practiced with care as the reason leg locks are no longer allowed is because the knee joint feels the pain after the damage rather than before in the case of the elbow which is the only joint to which pressure can be applied.
See additional notes at the foot of this page.

As with other kata Uke and Tori must maintain good posture throughout and move about the tatami in a purposeful way. Uki, when laying down should keep the left knee raised and head raised off of the mat. This may be unconfortable at first but it will certainly strengthen Uke's neck.
